ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA O-Bahn Guided Busway

Adelaide’s 12-kilometer [7.4-mile] O-Bahn Guided Busway opened in 1986 and was completed in 1989. The 6.2-meter-wide [20-foot-wide] busway links downtown Adelaide with the northeastern suburbs. Standard and articulated buses circulate in residential areas before entering the three-station busway.

A combination of concrete tracks and buses equipped with special lateral guidewheels allows the vehicles to operate manually, with normal service on roads, and automatically on the guideway by connecting the protruding guidewheels to the concrete track.

Speeds of up to 100 km/h [62 mph] are reached, cutting the journey time by more than half. Ridership has increased steadily since 1986 to about 30,000 per day.

Construction costs were approximated at $100 million in Australian dollars (A).

Tackling Homelessness with Data: The City of Santa Rosa, CA

Like many communities across the United States, Santa Rosa, California has seen its population of homeless citizens increase in recent years. In 2016, there were more than 3,000 homeless people in Sonoma County, 1,900 of whom lived in Santa Rosa. …

“Public interest was high,” says Eric McHenry, Chief Information Officer for Santa Rosa. “The main questions were around what can we do for the people in need.”

“After viewing the data, [the police chief] realized it didn’t make sense to have a flat level of staff, so he’s shifting his officer staffing to peak times.”

  • 3 months to launch and use Citizen Connect to make data-driven steps towards reducing homelessness
  • 1,000s of fire and police calls tracked and tagged to support data-driven analysis of homelessness
  • Trend analysis, as well as interactive maps and charts, support daily decision making

Affordable Housing Needs Attention in BC

<wip page>
Affordable Housing Needs Attention. As well, we need a map of Greater Victoria that shows the areas of “affordable land” to build the “affordable housing”. If we build on “expensive land”, taxes payers will need to subsidize it more forever. Before we chose “expensive land”, we should at least know the options.
